The first thing I notice is warmth.

Not just physical warmth, but the familiar hum of Jace's power wrapped around mine like a blanket. Like shelter. Like home.

I'm lying on my side, pressed against bare skin, and for a moment I let myself sink into the sensation. Into the steady rise and fall of his chest, the arm curved protectively around my waist, the way our powers are tangled together so completely I can barely tell where mine ends and his begins.

Then I see the wounds.

"What happened to you?" My fingers trace the edges of what looks like claw marks across his ribs, careful not to press too hard. There are other injuries too - bruises, cuts, something that might be a burn wrapping around his shoulder.

His laugh is sharp enough to cut. "You've been unconscious for two days after nearly killing yourself to save Ash, and you're worried about a few scratches?"

I try to sit up but his arm tightens, holding me in place.

"Jace-"

"No." His voice is rough, like he hasn't slept. Like he's been holding back words for days. "You don't get to act concerned about my welfare when you..." He breaks off, power surging around us. "Do you have any idea what it was like to come back and find you like that? To feel how close you came to..."

He doesn't finish, but his hand splays across my lower back, pulling me impossibly closer. Like he needs to feel my heartbeat against his. Like he needs proof I'm still here.

"I couldn't let him die." It comes out as a whisper against his chest.

"I know." Some of the anger drains from his voice, replaced by something that sounds too much like fear. "But next time..." His lips brush my temple. "Next time, wait for help. Wait for me."

"So you can what? Get more scratches?"

"They're not-" He sighs as I poke one of the less serious cuts. "Would you stop fussing over-"

"No." I push up on one elbow so I can see his face, ignoring the way the movement makes my head spin. "Not until you tell me what did this to you."

His jaw tightens. "It doesn't matter."

"It matters to me."

"Kit..." The way he says my name - half warning, half plea - makes my power surge, light shimmering under my skin.

"Tell me."

Instead of answering, he cups my jaw in his scarred hand and kisses me.

His kiss isn't gentle. It's demanding, punishing, a clear message that this conversation is over. That he's done arguing.

And gods help me, but my body responds instantly. My power flares, and I'm too weak to stop the way my skin glows as his fingers tighten on my jaw.

"For fuck's sake, Abbott. Some of us don't want to see your dick first thing in the morning."

Micah's voice makes me jump, but Jace just pulls the sheet higher over us without breaking the kiss.

"Then get out," he growls against my mouth.

"Can't. Kit needs to eat something, and since you've been hoarding her for two days..."

"I'm fine," I try to say, but Jace chooses that moment to nip my bottom lip in warning.
